I created a public service announcement poster campaign about the recent measles and whooping cough outbreaks in the United States. The three posters can be published as posters or as magazine ads. I am trying to target the parents of children who are young enough to still be properly vaccinated, in hopes of preventing the increase of unvaccinated children in Boulder County. Boulder County, Colorado, has particularly low childhood vaccination rates, but has a highly educated population. Parents in this area frequently consult their friends and family rather than medical doctors about the decision to vaccinate or not to vaccinate. I hoped to target parents in places where they are already thinking about their children, such as at grocery stores, daycare centers, and clinics, or when they are reading parenting magazines. Parents of unvaccinated children are adamant about making decisions independently for their children, are distrustful of government, and value organic and natural methods of raising their children. It is critical not to create an argument with these parents, but rather to force them to view vaccines and the vaccine-preventable diseases in a different light. My goal is that the parents who see these PSA posters will feel uncomfortable with the decision not to vaccinate their children, and will instead consider vaccinating their children upon seeing the raw facts about the real risks associated with the vaccine-preventable diseases. The poster will include a local immunization department or hotline for parents to call if they want to learn more about vaccines from experts in their own community. My goal is to hopefully cultivate the pro-vaccine opinion within the Boulder community.
